Saltwater aquarium: importance of live sand

Be it saltwater or freshwater aquarium, many things involve in making it. And live sand is one of them. Live sand is something sourced from a coral reef or cultured from non-living coral sand. Micro and macro-organism available in the substrate, the sand provides your underwater ecosystem with all natural bacterial aiding in water purification and general stability.  Micro-organism helps consume the waste present in the substrate as well as provides a natural source of food for many of the inhabitants.

If you are looking for a custom aquarium, you had better avoid using regular types of sand such as beach or builder’s sand. These sorts of sands naturally have silicates that will cause algae problems in your aquarium that will be very difficult to overcome. So keep in mind, when you are having a salt water aquarium, you must use live sand or aragonite material that contain natural elements vital for a good environment for fishes.

There are many sources you can get live sand from. But you should purchase it only from a renowned dealer specializing in the reef aquarium. You should buy it from suppliers who obtain it directly from the ocean or specialize in the cultured live sand. Also, buying from a reputable supplier ensures you are buying quality live sand and thus getting the best value for your money. If you are buying it from the suppliers located in other places, make sure that the transit time is minimal as die off can occur. The quicker you get it, the better and more effective it will be for the saltwater reef tank and during the cycling process.
